Whale Rider
Like many of the works we have read this semester, the film Whale Rider addresses the issues of cultural conflict, pride, and change. Which one of these issues made the greatest impression on you as a viewer? Please share your assessment and understanding of this issue in a post. Don't forget to support what you say with one or more specific examples from the film and then make a connection to something else we have read this semester AND something from your own life.

The theme that stood out to me the most was change. The way the young girl constantly tried to learn and be as great as her ancestors was inspiring. Her grandfather believed that only boys could be strong and carry on the traditions. Pakea didnt listen to her grandfather and ended up doing what the boys that were being taught failed to do. She retrieved the whale tooth from the ocean when the boys failed. She got the whales to move when the others couldnt. She proved to her grandfather that it was time for a change and that women were just as good as boys.
ReplyDeleteThe issue in Whale Rider that made the greatest impression on me as a viewer was change. In the film the Pako wasn't interested in the girl baby, he wanted a girl. Once he got used to the fact that the Pikea was going to be around but he wasn't willing to accept her as cheif. Although Pikea was his grand daughter, he still refused to treat her as she was something special. Pikea did everything the right to become the chief and her grand father just was not pleased in any way. For instance, she made the stick fall from the boy's hand, she found the necklace in the ocean, and she got the whale back into the ocean. this issue had the greatest impression on me because, although she was his grand daughter, he didnt have a special place in his heart for her in the beginning.
ReplyDeleteAs a viewer, pride is the one that has had the biggest effect on me. It is what stuck out the most to me in the movie. The grandfather had so much pride that he didn’t want to give up for his granddaughter. He had wanted to keep the tradition of male chiefs going within his family and that if it had changed it would be his fault. Just as when she had won the little battle with the boy and the sticks he came and yelled at her saying that she was going to ruin him. This situation can be compared to the character Napoleon in the novel animal farm. He was so into himself and had so much pride within himself that he wouldn’t step down for anybody no matter what. Something that I can compare myself to with this is when I know somebody else is correct about a situation and I don’t want to admit it because it hurts my pride that I’m wrong. If it is something that I truly believe is true it’s hard to forget it and have to believe somebody else. Pride is the biggest factor to me that I believe has changed things and has had the biggest effect on me as a viewer.
