Intermission: Watching and Discussing House of Sand and Fog
As we continue to view the film House of Sand and Fog we have had many opportunities to discuss characters, particular events, and themes. We noted the similarities between the Colonel and Baba from Kite Runner. We couldn't miss the obvious cultural conflicts that escalated the tension between Lester and the Colonel or the pride that contributed to the destruction of three families. However, we haven't really talked about the imagery - the trees, the birds, or all the fog and sand that seamlessly link the story events together. Why are they there? What do they mean? In today's blog response select just one of those repeating images and tell us what you think it might mean and how it figures into the story. (Oh, you cannot say a tree is just a tree here.)

I think the trees are kind of the setting for the movie. The house is in the middle of a lot of trees and back in Iran there were a lot of trees. So the trees kind of give a sense of home. Thats the comfort that the girl and the Iranian family have.
ReplyDeleteIn this movie I think the trees are an imagery for Kathy, and I think that it shows that she has been in one spot and growing from that spot. The spot is of course the house. The birds are imagery for The Colonel and his family because it represents them moving from place to place. The fog and sand represent how lost the characters are in there own thought. For example Kathy thinks she is right for trying to get the house back because it is(was) her fathers. The Colonel thinks he is right for keeping the house because he is trying to help his family.
ReplyDeleteIn the movie House of sand and fog, there are many different scenes of imagery. The one particular part of imagery that stuck out to me throughout the movie was the trees. The trees in this movie are like her, they stay in one spot but grow over time. Kathys spot was her home that her deceased father passed on to her. Her and the trees are similar because neither of them move or go away they just get older.
ReplyDeleteThe birds represents the confusion and animosity thats going on with the families and how they are trying to live their lives right. but it gets hard for them. LIke for example the man said broken birds. which means these birds dont know where they are going and they are trying to find there way. They committ suicide, murders and more until they are challenge to follow life and suck it up.
ReplyDeleteThe trees in the forest is a repeating image and it figures into the story because it is hard to see through a forest with all the trees and and in the story the same thing happens with the families. When Kathy loses her house to the Behrani's she doesn't understand why they can't see her situation and just give her the house back. The Behrani's lived in Iran and they were very wealthy people and they wanted the same as citizens of the United States. This family can't see why Kathy does the things she does and neither does Kathy and Lester. When wallking through a forest it is very hard to see with all the trees around.
ReplyDeleteThe fog is significant because fog makes it hard to see. In this movie The Behrani's can't see the picture of why Kathy wants her house from her point of view and Kathy can't see the bigger picture in the Behrani's point of view. Neither can really see the reasons of why the other person is doing the things they are doing. When fog is around it is very diffucult to see anything but yourself.
ReplyDeleteI think the imagery represented by the sand has to do with the instability of life. The whole situation with the house is very unstable. When you build a sand castle it falls as soon as a wave comes to knock it down. Mr. Behrani, Kathy, Lester, Esmail, and Mrs. Behranis life were all destroyed by a wave of problems.
ReplyDeleteThe imagery that stood out to me the most was the trees. Kathy had set her roots in that house she had a husband and her father gave it to her in the will after he died. She was extremely rooted to her father as well, so like a baby tree, if u rip some of the roots out, the only way to keep it growing is to plant it somehwere else. Kathy took her roots tht were ripped and planted herself into that house. She had a life there and so had her father. After her father's roots stopped maintaining life, Kathy's roots started off where her father's ended. This house was Kathy's need for survival in a way.
