A Common Enemy
Although Chapter 5 may open with gunfire, that threat is nothing compared to the bully of the Wazir Akbar Khan section of Kabul. With his stainless-steel brass knuckles, the tall, blond, blue-eyed Assef terrorizes the boys in the neighborhood, especially Amir and Hassan. Assef is truly a scary young man. Beyond the immediate physical threat he poses to the boys, what about his words and actions did you find the most frightening? Select one thing that is said by Assef, explain what about his words you found the most unnerving, and then connect it to some real world circumstance or event.

One thing that Assef says that is seriously unnerving is that he agrees if everyone was more like Hitler the world would be a better place. That the Hazara race should be killed off just like Hitler did with the jews. His words are just like the halocaust. Hitler killed jews because he felt they were not worth anything and that the best race was the arian race which contains only people with pale skin, blond hair, and blue eyes. The whole situation was stupid ironc because hitler was everything BUT arian. He had tan skin, dark hair, and dark eyes. If the world was more like hitler then there would only be but a few races left on the earth.
ReplyDeleteThe most unnerving thing that Assef says in chapter five is the statement about wiping all of the Hazara's out of Afghanistan, because they "dirty their blood." He wants to follow Hitler's past to do so, taking drastic violent measures to rid Afghanistan of all the Hazara's of the Shi'a. Assef believes that Pashtun of the Sunni is the better religion or race and that they should rule Afghanistan.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing that Assef said to me that I truly disagree with was that everyone should be like Hilter in do what he did to the jews to the harzara(s). Assef believe that the harzaras are useless and the world would be a better place without them. He was very rude to that race and unfair to the boy. I think that Assef was just being honest in a way that the mea part of him had to come out.
ReplyDeleteThe words of Assef that I found to be most frightening were when he called Hassan all types of names. He had no respect for Amir and Hassan because they were friends and he didn’t like the Hazaras because of his belief in Hitler. The actions of Assef that I found to be most frightening were when he threatened Hassan and Amir with his brass knuckle. The thing about Assef’s words that were the most unnerving was when he mentioned that the world would be a better place with Hitler. This relates to a real world circumstance because when Hitler was the person who encouraged the holocaust. During the time of the holocaust Hitler killed the Jews because he didn’t respect them and he thought they weren’t worth anything, this had an effect on Assef which was why he felt the way he did.
